Has anyone yet taken notice of the rather disastrous new VisualEditor that has been introduced at Wikipedia? It's a near-failure. Monkey-butler.jpg Sincerely, islandmonkey - go speak 17:38, 16 Jumbly 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, it's straight to 'edit source' for me. The VisEditor will likely mean an increase in vandalism too, I suspect some potential do-badders in the past were put off by the old-style edit screen. -- Ben Blade 19:09, 16 Jumbly 2013 (UTC)
I have been talking with them on the talk page. Much as I hate Visual Editor, I think it could actually be a good idea - WP seems to have falling retention rate of editors and they have done a study thing that shows that the code is actually driving away potential useful contributors. I have reverted some vandalism done with this editor though, and 95% of established editors, including me, don't use it (have turned it off entirely; you can do that). I am hoping against hope that someone is actually keeping track of whether the vandalism rate is up. I can't do that - I split my time between too many wikis, and sometimes my real life.
There has been quite some assumption of bad faith on the part of the MediaWiki developers. Saying they will be making money etc. I don't believe that bit but they have been a bit quick about rolling it out. There are so, so many bugs that need fixing. I'm not feeling very optimistic that they will be fixed within a reasonable amount of time.
Benedict Blade - it is possible to entirely remove VisualEditor from what you see. You have to go to 'Gadgets' under 'Preferences'. The MediaWiki developers did a nice job of making that more obscure than it had to be, so I'm not surprised that you didn't realise you could do it.  Flyingcat (meow?)fr: 01:56, 17 Jumbly 2013 (UTC)
But at least it's not as slow and annoying as Wikia's version. That's part of the reason I tend to stay away from Wikia wikis. I don't know why I ever bother editing them at all, actually.  Flyingcat (meow?)fr: 01:59, 17 Jumbly 2013 (UTC)
