The Republic of Albania (Albanian: Republika e Shqipërisë) is a country in the southwestern part of the Balkan Peninsula, facing the Adriatic Sea. It is governed by a republic. Its land area is 29,000 square kilometers (80% of the size of Kyushu, Japan). As of 2011, its population was 2,995,000. The population density is 104.2 people/km2. Its capital is Tirana. The country's name is said to be based on the name of the indigenous Illyrian Albanese people, who are said to derive their name from the Latin word "albus" (meaning white), but there are many theories and it is not clear. The Albanians call their country Shqipëria (meaning land of the eagle).
