Wikimedia Commons (or Commons for short) is a sister project of the Wikimedia Foundation, along with Wikipedia, and its purpose is to "contain and provide all Wikimedia projects, as well as images, audio, video, and other information that can be freely used by anyone." It began operations on September 7, 2004. In September 2009, the number of files exceeded 5 million.
