Forum:Wikia's proposition
I don't wanna discuss this on Kyle's page at the moment because I simply cannot be bothered right now I don't wanna clog up his talk page. However, I want to know what people think about the proposition he made yesterday. We have a selection of options with regards to this:
- Take them up on the offer and leave Wikia Illogicopedia to rot/die. Doing this would get some of our traffic back, but not all of it.
- Go a slightly different route and a) Rename and rebrand the wiki ourselves & b) Continue to look after the old wiki as an 'Illogian Heritage Site', much like the Editthis one.
- Say "Sod you Wikia" and continue to try and get the site closed down.
Personally, I am glad Wikia have come to their senses on this and now they are willing to negotiate instead of just saying 'no' to everything I suggest the second one. Elaboration on point #2:
You know, really go to town and make Wikia happy by giving them some traffic, but still retain control of our content. This way, some authors might reconsider having their articles restored and show there are no real hard feelings with Wikia. With the site, we could do all sorts of weird experiments like test out new admins, skins, ideas, whatever the hell we like and best of all, have a prominent link to the new Illogi. One idea would be to keep an extremely lax content policy similar to the one we had at the Editthis ?pedia, and move all crappy articles from the real Illogicopedia to the 'playbox' wiki. :P
On the minus side, it may mean maintaining 2 Illogis, not really a favourable idea.
What say everyone, you in agreement? Or any better ideas? -- Hindleyak Converse • ?blog • Click here! 12:12, 10 Ditzimber 2008 (UTC)
- As I commented on the forum, I actually quite like Kyleh's compromise. I say we take him up on it and let him make the wiki a read-only site, with a different name. That way, we can wash our hands of this whole nasty affair and commit ourselves fully to THIS site. I don't really like the idea of maintaining two sites. At all. But I encourage you all to tell Kyleh what you think of his idea on the forum, before he dissappears again. I say let's do it. There's no way we're getting a better offer from wikia. As long as the name is changed and it's a read-only site, we'll effectively be done with it. I'm actually very surprised at how reasonable this offer is. --THE 17:32, 10 Ditzimber 2008 (UTC)
- Speaking as a member of this community, i would say that wikia hasn't gone far enough, with their offer, its clear they have accepted that there is no community at wikia, so the only logical thing it to make a clear link to the new community and leave the content there on read only for whatever laws that they need to fulfil.
- From my perspective of the wikia community, then this would be fair enough, the community is all but dead, assuming it could not be revived, which i would deem neigh impossible because the site only sees drifters now, people who edit a few times, then loose interest, and have no vested interest in the wiki, plus, with new ?pedia always looming over, doubtlessly the wiki could never survive, it would be like trying to survive under uncyc, but much more crushing, as we have seen, many wikis have tried to do the same thing as ?pedia in the past and they have fizzled and died out.--Silent PenguinLeave Me Alone 21:18, 10 Ditzimber 2008 (UTC)
- I am willing to go ahead with the name change and for Kyle's proposed idea and I'm pleased to see they're finally ready to think about us rather than themselves for a change :P. I can put up with my content being held there, just about, it's the idea of having two separate Illogicopedias that made the whole thing not-very-pleasant to me. As has been mentioned, almost two years of hard work went into creating the wiki currently at Wikia, and I think it would take a very determined team of users to properly revive that project from the dead. Yep, I too can see it dying off as all attempts to revitalise it fail, but it doesn't matter as the content and the community are here now. Except Fonchezzz, who seems to be the only one not in favour of the move. The way I see it, I can put up with 1 or 2 hours a day of downtime/extreme slowdowntime to be free of Wikia. I suggest we make our split with them as amicable as possible because, despite the fact some of their decisions weren't massively beneficial to us, they did host our wiki for nineteen months. -- Hindleyak Converse • ?blog • Click here! 12:17, 11 Ditzimber 2008 (UTC)
- I dont think Fonchezzz sees the whole picture, as for wikia, really we dont owe them anything, sure they hosted us, but that wasnt free, may have been free monetary wise, but not in other regards, we have paid our debt for the hosting, which is what annoys me, wikia want to use our work, for their own personal gain, after the hosting isn't needed. The tables have generally turned, We wanted wikia to host us, they wouldnt for a long while, then they obliged, but from my position, they made me feel like they were the one doing us a favour with a rotten oyster under their toungue the whole time. we asked for things many times but never got further than "we will look into it" from the channel, occasionally being given a ticket number, only to have it closed with no solution or reasoning offered when I check days later. Now wikia wants a favour from us, with their ass covering TOC so they can quote the law all they want, there is more things to pleasing clients than bending the law to their own means. The law is to stop people killing each other, its not the line for morals, you dont come out the victor if you discard co-operate respectability.--Silent PenguinLeave Me Alone 15:39, 11 Ditzimber 2008 (UTC)
- As I understand it, Fonchezzz was indifferent until he got frustrated with the slowness of the new site. I too have noticed that the new site is sometimes slower than the old one, but as I have broadband, not intolerably slow. I too hope that the new site will speed up in time, but have no plans to go back to the old site with its annoying ads, except maybe rarely if I feel like writing something that is probably not up to the standards of the new site. If Fonchezzz wants to rename the old site "duckopedia" or something and run it himself (or with KyleH co-moderating), I don't mind, but I do think that content requested to be removed should be removed. Just my thoughts on the matter. simsilikesims 01:50, 13 Ditzimber 2008 (UTC)
