The Marine Le Pen submarine pen was originally invented to solve the problem of run-off when using conventional pens on submarines. Because the first prototype had only a 21.7% success rate, a second prototype was investigated.

The second prototype worked slightly better at 33.9%, but it still wasn't good enough for the French Navy, so they decided to use a Macron brand pencil instead.
