When I was a kid, I remember whenever I used Microsoft Word on our family's Windows 98 computer, the grammar checker would underline your words whenever you used passive voice.

I wonder if this contributed to the demonization of to-be verbs. E-Prime itself is, of course, much older, but maybe it had something to do with a resurgence in popularity. Like somebody who grew up using Microsoft Word during that timeframe might be led to believe the passive voice is something to be avoided at all costs, and then might gravitate towards E-Prime upon coming across it on the Internet.
