Forum:The Big Move - checklist

From Illogicopedia
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Alright, we all know the proposed move is still up in the air so I thought that I'd make a topic weighing up positives/negatives/what'd need to happen for the move to go ahead.

Positives:[edit source]

  • We are rid of that blasted Monaco skin (and that stupid line space at the top of every page on Monobook has to go)
  • We can install all our own extensions and be a bit more adventurous with our site design due to the removal of forced Google ads
  • Best of all, we don't have our hands tied by anybody and are free to operate pretty much as we like, meaning no Wikia advertisements or staff members telling us what to do
  • We can make our own namespaces for Illogidictionary, Illogigames, etc. which would be top

Negatives:[edit source]

  • The cash. Around £120 a year on the cheapest option, which is not to be sneezed at, especially for a non-profit website such as Illogicopedia. This may mean begging for donations at some point
  • We wouldn't be babysat by Wikia any more. In other words, all those times when no admins are online there ain't gonna be a Wikia caretaker staff member to revert vandals. The solution to this, of course, would be to appoint admins in the US timezone etc. It ain't that big a problem but an issue nonetheless
  • We have to do our own Mediawiki updates, meaning more effort on the technical side
  • There's no turning back to Wikia if things go tits up

Housekeeping[edit source]

  • Finding some way of copying the whole database across from the old servers to the new ones. This involves categories etc. and all 2,000 images. The last move was a real pain to copy everything across by hand, and that was only about 200 pages! We will need Wikia's help on this
  • We need to get Wikia to let us have illogicopedia.wikia.com redirect to illogicopedia.org
  • Appoint new admins (see above)
  • Fix all links on Illogiblog (I'll probably get round to that at some point down the line)
  • Chatroom hosted by Wikia? I dunno about this
  • If we can't get an appropriate extension, fix all interwikia links (and one or two Wikipedia ones). Maybe run a bot for this

This is meant to be an ongoing checklist should we get to the stage where we can move, just so people know what exactly going independent would entail. It wouldn't be easy - as you know, we are nowhere near as big as Uncyc and there isn't a massive base of regular techie users. ANY help at all from anyone would be greatly appreciated but we'll keep you all posted as and when stuphs happen. -- Hindleyak  Converse?blogClick here! 18:55, 22 Ergust 2008 (UTC)

Transformers wiki[edit source]

They recently moved from Wikia to a new server and there doesn't seem to have been a redirect set up for them. If we don't get a redirect from wikia.com/illogicopedia then all links elsewhere on the internet will be broken. Just a note. -- Hindleyak  Converse?blogClick here! 13:36, 19 Serpeniver 2008 (UTC)

So what will it mean if we leave?[edit source]

Will we be like Uncyclopedia, or will we be completely independent? Some WHAT!? (talk) (contribs) (edit count) 21:01, 30 Serpeniver 2008 (UTC)

I think we'd be more like Uncyc before they were taken in by Wikia (a couple of years back now). They sourced loooooads of users from Wikipedia (it being a project started at the Bad Jokes and Deleted Nonsense page) so were able to grow and cope with everything pretty well. Illogic is a bit different because we don't quite have that userbase or originality (as in, the first parody wiki like Uncyc was) to raise interest, hence the stalling.
The plan to move is currently on hold until further notice, but Seppy wants to talk to me about something this week, I dunno what... -- Hindleyak  Converse?blogClick here! 09:47, 1 Octodest 2008 (UTC)
