'Sup dudes.

Whilst trawling through some of the old featured articles, I noticed that, in many cases, the feature templates are actually getting in the way of pictures/infoboxes etc. Take the article fish, for example, where it's been shoved right down to the bottom because it looks like crap anywhere else. Course, this isn't ideal as the user has to scroll down the page to find out the article has been featured.

Now, I'm just throwing this out there, and I know previous attempts at this sort of thing have been unsuccessful (though I can't remember exactly who proposed it, maybe FlyingIdiot?), but I think that perhaps we could take a leaf out of Wikipedia's book and indicate an article's featureage via the top margin (as shown on this very page, up at the top right there).

Pros: it looks mint and stops the feature template getting in the way of stuff.

Cons: makes it less obvious that an article has been featured at a cursory glance.

I propose we implement this idea, at least for a short while. By the way, 2007 features will have the red version of the bananastar, indicating the fact they were featured at a time when quality control on highlighted articles was 'less good'. I'm planning to link them in with a new features archive as well.

The proposed template, for your delectation.

If nobody objects, I'll go ahead and give them a trial run. -- Hindleyak  Converse?blogClick here! 12:12, 12 Arche 2010 (UTC)

Heck no techno. I like where you're going with it and I think it needs to change a bit but that's WAY TOO SMALL. --T3 13:07, 12 Arche 2010 (UTC)
It's bigger than Wikipedia's icon, if that's what you mean. -- Hindleyak  Converse?blogClick here! 13:17, 12 Arche 2010 (UTC)
I like the floating icon at the top. However, I think it would be good as well if we could keep a template in there, so they don't just pass the article by without noticing a feature (because, as you said, it would be sort of hard to notice that little banana star). Maybe we should swerve towards uncyc on this one, with a template and a fixed image on top. —rms talk 15:07, 12 Arche 2010 (UTC)
I quite like Uncyclopedia's setup, though the templatey bit at the bottom is a tad dated now. -- Hindleyak  Converse?blogClick here! 15:29, 12 Arche 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, we can keep the stamp up top, I really do like it, but I think taking the uncyc approach would be a little better. AT [www.darthipedia.org Darthipedia], they only have the stamp up top, so it's pretty difficult to notice which articles have been featured and what not.
Also, that featured article setup there is really fancy. I like it. —rms talk 15:29, 12 Arche 2010 (UTC)
I call a referendum.--Ben Blade 21:30, 12 Arche 2010 (UTC)
I was going to suggest we make it smaller, and stick it above the article in the title, like the icon, only as the template... --Silent Penguin 14:31, 15 Arche 2010 (UTC)
Ah, so a mini version of the current feat template squeezed into the top margin? -- Hindleyak  Converse?blogClick here! 15:31, 15 Arche 2010 (UTC)
I recommend a referndum--Ben Blade 16:52, 15 Arche 2010 (UTC)
Hindlyite, Yeah. --Silent Penguin 20:21, 16 Arche 2010 (UTC)

Having not noticed the "What is this crap" thing...[edit source]

I say we do this template, as it is nicer looking and relatively cool. As it stands now I think it's fine, but if anyone really wants to make minor changes we can do that. Still, I say we switch nao. —rms talk 22:58, 16 Yoon 2010 (UTC)

I'm with Rimmesoon on this one, fitting the current template into article's without moving pictures and/or the kitchen sink is often a nightmare. But if we switch someone *cough* I */cough* will probably have to go back and change articles where the template is at the bottom, or cleverly weaved into the contents space etc. Blargle Testostereich(ballsack) 09:36, 17 Yoon 2010 (UTC)
Well, I could do that, as I don't have a social life irl. —rms talk 14:40, 17 Yoon 2010 (UTC)
Idea, hold on --(ƒî)»17:40, 17 Yoon 2010 (UTC)
FI: I like yours but it is inconvenient actually get to the template, because once your mouse leaves the star the template disappears.
I think we should just have it like Hindleyite's ideas, I mean, it would be more noticeable than current templates because they don't even have the "What is this crap?" tag on them anymore. —rms talk 19:24, 21 Yoon 2010 (UTC)
@rms: Found a way around that disappearing problem.

*nudge*[edit source]

Are we going to change all of the templates? I'll move them around if we do. —rms talk 18:20, 19 Jumbly 2010 (UTC)

@rms: found a way around that disappearing problem.
Provided the two JS scripts I asked Hindeley to insert into common.js aren't conflicting, this should work: Icon Demo --(ƒî)» 04:54, 20 Jumbly 2010 (UTC)
Lovely. Let's do it! —rms talk 05:13, 20 Jumbly 2010 (UTC)
Does it work for you? The messages should show/hide when you click their icons in the corner. It works for me, but I also have the script in my userscripts. --(ƒî)» 05:24, 20 Jumbly 2010 (UTC)
It doesn't do that, but clicking it takes me to the template. I'll try putting the scripts on. —rms talk 05:36, 20 Jumbly 2010 (UTC)
Success! —rms talk 05:40, 20 Jumbly 2010 (UTC)
But why doesn't it work without it? meh, too bad I can't tinker with it --(ƒî)» 04:18, 23 Jumbly 2010 (UTC)
I think it's fine even without, we can put the template at the bottom of the page. Then, when someone clicks the star, it will bring them to the template at the bottom. no scrolling! Genie-ous! And if you do have the script that's handy too. —rms talk 04:50, 23 Jumbly 2010 (UTC)
Awesome! Great if this doesn't ever But if someone wants to clear out the old scripts and refresh, then maybe we can get it working. Thinking it might need to go in monobook.js? 2 am + javascript =bad. Also, people need to clean out the Speedy bin moar.--(ƒî)» 06:57, 23 Jumbly 2010 (UTC)
