"Stay in Bed" technique

The Stay in Bed Technique is a useful technique aimed at keeping children in bed. It is particularly effective for children persistently getting out of bed and visiting their parents. It is frequently used by Jo Frost in Supernanny whilst she is coaching a family.
Procedure of the Technique[edit | edit source]
Once you have put your children to bed, you go downstairs to begin your evening. If the children get out of bed and come down to you, say (in a soft voice) "It's bedtime, darling", and take them to their room and tuck them in. The second time, just say nice and softly (not too softly) "Bedtime.". The third time, you say nothing. Say nothing for every time after the third. Reason:: Because every time you speak to your children, you are rewarding them with communication, so they will continue to get out of bed to engage in conversation with you.
