Some people compare America's cultural diversity to a "melting pot". A better metaphor would be a "cultural stew". Think about stew for a minute. In a stew, the ingredients are mixed together but maintain their individual integrity - the potatoes retain their potatoness, the carrots retain their carrotness, and the peas retain their peaness.
