Hardhats are a common thing at construction site but, the origin is unknown.
There was an idiot named John Q. Sample and he never ever remembered to tie his shoes so he had to wear a helmet in case he tripped and fell and broke his head. One day, it was take your child to work day and his dad worked on a construction site. He came there in a plastic helmet and then all the construction workers thought that that was now standard issue. Everyday people started coming into work with plastic helmets. From now on they use the excuse that "it protects their head".
