Forum:!?!!?
Ok. So here I was after a week of no writing. I went on with my ordinary things... just checking around. AND WOAH! MY EDITS DONT COUNT!#@#@! so I noticed we moved. and now everythings really slow. Is there anything else I should know about. Even the edit toolbar is changed! Will my userpage need to be redone? and my signature?--Fonchezzz 16:05, 9 Novelniver 2008 (UTC)
Uh nevermind. I spoke too soon. I think I can get by. I was just a bit shocked.--|Fonchezzz| Quacking| 16:14, 9 Novelniver 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Fonch, nice to see you found our new home! Haha, don't worry so much, it'll all be for the better in the long run. We've only been working on fixing things for a few days so be patient and soon we'll be back to normal. Mostly. The edits thing is on a to do list (somewhere) but I'm not sure if there's anything we can carry our edits over. Contribs, on the other hand, are imported.
- I've outlined the major changes here. You can get yer sig back by going into your preferences and pasting {{Subst:Nosubst|User:Fonchezzz/sig}}, then tick the raw sigs box.
- It's moving slowly for you? Might be a busy server day or something because I can't really tell the difference between loading speeds here and on Wikia. Trust me, it was super fast yesterday evening. Edit toolbar? Oh right, I never use that. There's probably a way of importing the old one, but it's pretty low on the priority list at the moment. Any problems, tell us about it and we'll try and iron out the bugs. -- Hindleyak Converse • ?blog • Click here! 16:19, 9 Novelniver 2008 (UTC)
The edit toolbar appears differently, as there is an submit-in-toolbar extension which adds a set of preview, compare and save buttons.
Some other things to watch are:
- Random <choose>/<option> tags in templates operate differently in the newer MediaWiki version. If a page contains multiple {{noun}} templates, the new MediaWiki tries to optimise page generation by generating the template text once and substituting it for every instance. The workaround is to use {{noun|}} instead of {{noun}}, for instance, so that each instance of the template is forced to be generated individually.
- Hotlinks to images on wikia.com will need to be replaced with links to the same images here. These mostly seem to be being used in user-signature templates.
- HTML tags in templates need to be matched correctly, so if your template uses <small> text it needs the matching </small> at the end of that text. Older MediaWiki versions would close some spurious mismatched tags at the end of a template, the new one does not. Wikipedia has the new MediaWiki 1.14alpha, Wikia does not, so imported Wikipedia content should be fine while Wikia leftovers often need to have any HTML errors fixed for use on MW 1.14.
- The <inputbox> tag may need to be replaced with <createbox> for "create a page" links to work optimally. See mw:extension:CreateBox for an explanation of the differences between the two extensions.
- Interwiki links are as listed in special:interwiki, for instance a link to en:illogicopedia from another language in the project is now en: and not w:c:illogicopedia: or something awkward.
- Per-namespace logos in MediaWiki:Common.css currently exist for ns-110, ns-111 (Forum/talk) but will need to be added for the new namespaces. There is also an extension (#logotipo) which allows the logo to be changed on a per-page basis. for instance Desciclopedia:Mercado Livre uses a joke logo on one page only.
- If an image is missing locally, the server will attempt to use the common repository at http://jpe.gs; that repository contains most of the public-domain http://openclipart.org images as well as some of the Uncyclopedia collection.
I still need to look into a few stubborn bugs left after Thursday's server hardware upgrades; the APC cache needs to be installed on the new server and special:namespaces is also acting strangely at times. --Carlb 16:40, 9 Novelniver 2008 (UTC)
ah. Ya its reallly slow. to get to a new page it takes at least 2 minutes. and it isnt my computer. Every other site works well!--|Fonchezzz| Quacking| 00:29, 10 Novelniver 2008 (UTC)
- Strange, working smooth as a baby's buttock for me at the moment - maybe it just has its slow periods. What browser are you using? -- Hindleyak Converse • ?blog • Click here! 12:19, 10 Novelniver 2008 (UTC)
- Its usually around 22-23 GMT that the speed of the website slows and the bugs toughen up. Also, piss away the time on IRK people :D :P --Silent PenguinLeave Me Alone 12:28, 10 Novelniver 2008 (UTC)
- I find the site to be a little slow around noon or midnight GMT (noon being 9AM in Brazil, 9PM in Tokyo, a time when other large sites on the Uncyclopedia
BabbleBabel servers are all actively in use.) In most other time periods, it has been doing relatively well now that the third server has been added. --Carlb 01:43, 11 Novelniver 2008 (UTC)
