Forum:Notifying people of the move

From Illogicopedia
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Well, I saw that Wikia want to take over Illogicopedia and use it for their own sick pleasures as soon as possible. I reckon we ought to let them though it reeeally cheeses me off that they're doing it now rather than in a month's time, when the majority of our users will have found this site.

Anyways, I just spent an hour sending out the following message to about 100 people:

Hi. This is a message from your friendly neighbourhood Illogicopedia administrator. Illogicopedia has moved from its home at Wikia! Despite what Wikia claim, none of the community remain there - the site can now be found at:
http://www.illogicopedia.org
If you received this message, it's because you were a user at the old Illogicopedia and haven't yet created an account at the new site. A fair notice, because Wikia evidently refuses to acknowledge the departing community's existence!
Anyway, have fun on the new site, and fnurdletoot.

Note the ever so slight anti-Wikia bias! ;)

I sent it to everyone at the old Illogicopedia that had an email account registered. If they did not have one, I checked to see if they were on Uncyclopedia and emailed them via their page there. Failing that, I dropped them a message on their Uncyc talkpage.

We could take this a step further and notify every user of the old Illogicopedia on their userpages. What does everyone think of the idea? Will it help people find the new wiki, or will it just bring more traffic for Wikia? -- Hindleyak  Converse?blogClick here! 14:58, 21 Novelniver 2008 (UTC)

Long term wise, i think it'd be worth it. If we come up with the message here to copy and paste, then we can each hit up a section of talkpages (alphabetically apportioned for example), if that sounds good? --TReich (My Bad) 16:49, 27 Novelniver 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, we could split the workload going through Special:Listusers. That way they'd have more people to ban if they don't like it... :) -- Hindleyak  Converse?blogClick here! 17:42, 27 Novelniver 2008 (UTC)

I do get the impression that this amounts to just posting the same message a hundred times to the same dead wiki. Do what you will, but at some point some effort may need to be put into making those outside the existing Illogicopedian community aware of our situation. I've tried creating a timeline of the Wikia problems as http://complaintwiki.org but am not sure what the best next step would be. Illogicopedia is just a small piece of a larger puzzle; the preservation of dead Wikia forks of newly-independent projects was something we were struggling with on various Scandanavian-language Uncyclopedia projects two years ago, at this moment it's Transformers (tfwiki.net) and Illogicopedia (illogicopedia.org) and odds are the next batch will be Creatures, WikiFur and whichever other communities have expressed an intent to leave Wikia. We do need to get in touch with those communities and work together on creating some sort of protest which extends well outside Wikia, where people can see it and Wikia can be exposed for what they have become. Does anyone here edit on the other affected projects or remain in touch with authors who do so? --Carlb 02:21, 29 Novelniver 2008 (UTC)
