Illogicopedia:IllogiGames/Grids of War/rules
Here is a complete list of the items in Grids of War and what they do.
Grids[edit | edit source]
On each level, a map of the grid you are on displays, showing all the squares. The place where you are is marked by an asterisk (*).
How to move[edit | edit source]
- The goal is to get as many points in as few moves as possible.
- You can move up, down, left, or right.
- You can't go to the same square more than once unless it is Special. Special squares are colored red on your map of the grid. Squares you have been to before that are not Special are colored yellow.
- If you are wounded, you can skip a turn to heal yourself; however this counts as one of your moves. Skipping a turn to heal gives you back 1 hit point (see How combat works).
Teleporting squares[edit | edit source]
On some grids, there are two squares that appear blue on the grid map. If you end up on one of them, you have the option of going into the other one. This doesn't count as a moves. These squares are automatically Special.
Gold[edit | edit source]
If you go onto a square with a bag of gold, you get to keep the gold coins and use them at the end of the level to buy weapons and protection.
Potions[edit | edit source]
If you drink a potion it restores your health completely, but you have to get one first.
Random Objects[edit | edit source]
Bananas[edit | edit source]
You may go into a square and find a banana. In this case you can take it to a wizard, who will turn it into a magical banana.
Laptop computers[edit | edit source]
Although this is rare, you may find a laptop computer sitting around. These are not useless.
Weapons and protection[edit | edit source]
Weapons help you kill unfriendly creatures you meet in the game, by giving you a better chance of hitting them, and a stronger blow when you do. Protection helps you block enemy blows.
You can find weapons and protection by going into squares with one, by defeating an enemy who uses one, or by buying one with gold at the end of a level.
How combat works[edit | edit source]
You have a certain number of shots at hitting your opponent, and your opponent has a certain number of shots at hitting you. Sometimes, there is also a chance that nothing happens.
Let's say that you have three shots at hitting your opponent, and your opponent has two shots at hitting you. The odds are 3 to 2 that you will hit your opponent in
By default, you as a human being have one shot at hitting your opponent, so even if you don't have a weapon, you can fight with your bare hands. Your "wrestling capabilities" mean that if you hit your opponent, your opponent loses 1 hit point. Using a weapon will inflict more damage.
You have 10 hit points. Your opponent also has a certain number of hit points, depending on what creature your opponent is.
Each time your opponent hits you, you lose a certain number of hit points. You keep fighting until either you or your opponent runs out of hit points. If you run out of hit points, you die and the game is over. If your opponent runs out of hit points, the opponent dies and your score increases.
List of weapons[edit | edit source]
Stick[edit | edit source]
A stick is long, so it gives you an extra chance at hitting an opponent. It's also got a good poking end, so it causes your opponent to lose two hit points instead of just one. It's easy to break, though. If it breaks nothing happens, but then you don't have a stick anymore.
A stick can be bought between levels for 15 gold coins.
Club[edit | edit source]
Like a stick, a club also gives you an extra chance and inflicts an extra damage point. However, it doesn't break as often as the stick, so you have to pay 20 gold coins in order to buy it between two levels.
Bow and arrow[edit | edit source]
The bow and arrow gives you an extra chance at hitting, and if you hit, one damage point is inflicted. However, it's better than a club, because on your first shot, there is absolutely no chance your opponent will hit you,[1] and there is an additional one chance that you will miss. If you hit you inflict 2 damage points, and if you miss nothing happens.
A bow and arrow can be bought between levels for 25 gold coins.
Knife[edit | edit source]
A knife doesn't extend your length that much, but it's sharp on both the bottom and the point, so it still gives you an extra chance at a hit. And when it hits, it inflicts THREE damage points, because that point is sharp. A knife can be bought between levels for 30 gold coins.
Spear[edit | edit source]
A spear gives you a very large length advantage, but its point is blunter than a knife, so it gives you 2 extra chances and inflicts 2 damage points. It is the equal opposite of the knife, so it is also worth 30 gold coins.
You can throw a spear on your first shot. There is no chance your opponent will hit you.[1] You have two hit shots and one miss shot. If you hit, you inflict 3 damage points, and if you miss you won't be able to get your spear back until your opponent dies. Unlike the bow and arrow, this spear throw is a lottery, so it doesn't add to the worth of the weapon.
Sword[edit | edit source]
The best of the weapons and therefore worth 40 gold coins. It gives you a good length advantage and is sharp on all sides, so there are 2 extra chances you will hit, and its iron edges inflict three damage points.
Magical banana[edit | edit source]
If you throw a magical banana at an enemy it will disappear... along with the banana.
List of protection items[edit | edit source]
Helmet[edit | edit source]
If you are wearing a helmet, there is one chance that whatever weapon your opponent is using will just glance off the helmet.[1] If you are wearing both a helmet and either armor or chain mail, then when your enemy hits it will inflict one less damage point.
A helmet can be bought between levels for 20 gold coins.
Shield[edit | edit source]
If you have a shield, there is one chance that you will be able to block your opponent's weapon.[2] It's worth the same as a helmet, so it also costs 20 gold coins.
Armor[edit | edit source]
If you're wearing metal armor, then there are two chances your opponent's weapon will glance off the armor.[2] It can be bought between levels for 30 gold coins.
Chain mail[edit | edit source]
The best of the defenses and therefore worth 40 gold coins. When you are wearing chain mail there are three chances that your opponent's weapon will hit the mail and be unable to go through,[1] but when your opponent's weapon is the bow and arrow, the three chances are reduced to two, because the arrow may or may not be able to pierce the mail.
You cannot wear chain mail and armor at the same time.
List of creatures[edit | edit source]
Unfriendly[edit | edit source]
Whenever you go into a space with an unfriendly creature, you have to fight it. If you kill it you get a certain number of points.
Evil clowns[edit | edit source]
These enemies are human warriors in clown suits. You get 10 points for killing them, plus the worth in gold coins of whatever weapon they are holding. It could be anything, but they never have any protection.
Since they are human, they have 10 hit points and an automatic chance at hitting you.
Trolls[edit | edit source]
Trolls don't have very good weaponry. They usually have just a stick or a club. However, trolls are very large, so they have 25 hit points instead of the human 10. Also, trolls are very strong so you lose an extra hit point when you get hit by them.
Most of the time you have to fight a troll. However, if you give a troll a laptop computer, it will get distracted and start vandalizing Wikipedia. You don't get any points for that, but if you defeat a troll you get 50 points.
Dragons[edit | edit source]
Dragons don't have any weaponry at all, but they are tough enough by themselves. Even if you do manage to get toward them with your weapon, you will probably hit their tough scales, which means it loses 2 less hit points -- only knives and swords can make it through to the interior. Dragons have 20 hit points, so it is no easy task even with a knife or a sword, and REALLY TOUGH without one.
Dragons have sharp claws. There are 4 chances that a dragon will swipe you with their claws and cause you to lose 3 hit points. There are also 2 chances that it will breathe fire at you, one of which is a hit and one of which is a miss. If the fire scorches you, you lose 9 hit points, so unless you are at full health this is fatal.
You get 210 points for killing a dragon. (A good strategy is to save magical bananas for when you encounter a dragon.)
Friendly[edit | edit source]
Elves[edit | edit source]
Elves are often useful. They may have a spare health potion to give you, or they may know the location of a weapon.
Leprechauns[edit | edit source]
Leprechauns will tell you the location of a pot of gold.
Wizards[edit | edit source]
Wizards put enchantments on bananas so that they become magical bananas.
Nuisances[edit | edit source]
Monkeys[edit | edit source]
If you have a banana, magical or not, then a monkey you meet will climb all over you, causing you to lose 1 hit point. The only way to avoid this is to give the monkey the banana. If the banana is magical the monkey will explode, but this doesn't give you any extra points or anything.
You must decide: Which is more important, the banana or the hit point?
