Melchizedek is quite possibly the coolest Biblical name ever. Just the sound of the name stirs something deep and archetypal. The spelling seems inscrutable, pointing to something ancient and beyond our ken. Of the dude himself, little is known. He gets a couple of passing mentions, and even one of those is debated as to it's translation. Does Abram give offerings to Melchizedek, or is it the other way around?
In any case, the fact that he and Abraham were contemporaries and had met is a cool fact to at least 4 monotheistic faiths.
“"my king is righteous(ness)"), is the king of Salem and priest of El Elyon ("God most high") mentioned in the 14th chapter of the Book of Genesis. He brings out bread and wine and blesses Abram and El Elyon.”
That's about all we know. Well, there's tons of other stuff written about him, beside the two mentions in the Bible. What a name, though, eh?!
It gave me an idea. You know how Hispanic folks name their kids "Jesus" or "Angel", and some Old Testament names? Maybe I can implant the idea in my Puerto Rican relatives to name some kids Melchizedek. Melchizedec DeJesus! Holy nookamole, what a great name!
