Should I stick a carrot in my ear then? XY007talkcontributions 02:26, 13 Arply 2015 (UTC)
This might take a lot of convincing, but I'm afraid it's already there. Decks.png ~ Good tidings! ~ 09:28, 13 Arply 2015 (UTC)

I think Dr. Malarkey Gab of Illogicology would like zis page.
But honestly, the original purpose of this thread was to argue about medical marijuana use. XY007talkcontributions 00:30, 16 Yoon 2015 (UTC)
I am disappointed in how marijuana legalization is being handled in Massachusetts. It does not affect me personally in a negative way. Basically, possession of an ounce or less is considered an ignorable offense. Medical users are offered an annual license, which is something like $250 including a medical consultation.
There are very few places where medical professionals are doing this, and they all specialize in prescribing (or not), offering other services that tend to be related to alternative medicine. I think most of these dudes are Osteopaths, who in this country, are basically considered the equivalent of MDs, but they also learn a specialty, spinal manipulation. This is similar to chiropractic practices, but from what I understand, is done more safely than chiros with more stringent guidelines. When I was a young man, I believed in chiropractic, and even went to university to apply for chiro college. I've probably had more than a hundred visits with more than a dozen practitioners during this sophomoric period in my life, and was convinced it was effective for me. After purging myself of magical thinking, I have discovered the foundations of chiropractic have no science to back them up. At best, it's a placebo. At worst, it's a cause of death by severed carotid arteries from a neck adjustment. But I digress.
Although my wife and I are both eligible for such licensing, we don't have the cash to spare. Our city was approved two years ago for a marijuana dispensary, but still nothing yet. When and if it gets built, the prices won't be cheap. Based on current retail value, it would probably cost around $300 a month for my personal needs. I'm not sure if there are any operating yet in the state, but even if the dozen or so approved locations were open outside of my city, it would be easier to go to Rhode Island, where I understand the marijuana situation runs more smoothly.
Doctors opinions run hot or cold about marijuana. My internist for about ten years, a wonderful doc, was all for it, for those inclined to use it. He understood enough about it to know it helps many with chronic nausea[1]. We lost him as our doc before legalization, but at that time he was willing to prescribe Marinol, a drug derived from cannabis for nausea. Our experience? Meh.
The dude we sort of were forced to take as our internist is kind of a dick about it. He had the nerve to write, in one person's record, that "Patient is dependent on marijuana." That's it. No context, just a statement of fact. It doesn't come out and say it, but it signals addictive personality to others in the field, which is another way of saying "drug seeking".
So, some whining, some personal experience and a lot of reading (I wouldn't say it rises to the level of research) to get this thread back on topic, I guess. Cheers. LAR Adriator-Gruntled.png(kaizum me)Plant2.png 05:09, 17 Yoon 2015 (UTC)
So you have to pay $250? XY007talkcontributions 07:36, 17 Yoon 2015 (UTC)
The license and office visit to the doc is around $250 each year. I use about an ounce a month, and maybe 6 months ago, I checked prices around the country. My best estimate is about $300 an ounce on average. My wife uses about the same amount, so double that for our family. Of course, we are talking about weed specifically grown to alleviate symptoms of pain, anxiety etc, and it's generally very strong compared to what's called "mid grade" quality on the street. That's what I used to get, for about $200 an ounce. At that time, maybe 3 years ago, I was paying up to $400 an ounce for street product comparable to medical grade. We could never afford that on our Medicare coverage and Social Security disability. If it weren't for our son, we'd be stuck smoking "ditch weed".
A license also allows a person to have up to 12 mature plants growing at any given time. Alternatively, one is allowed to purchase up to 10 ounces every 6 months. That part of the law is generous, and covers even those who use what I consider a whole bunch. Alternatively alternatively, one may have another licensed person to grow up to the same quantity on their behalf. Throughout this whole business, payments are not considered the same way as payment for just about anything else; they are called "donations", and are supposed to be calculated based on cost of services. So, other than dispensaries, growers cannot actually charge so much per ounce using the same method of calculation; it's supposed to take profit out of the equation, thereby discouraging individuals from growing lots and lots and getting greedy.
Seeds cost anywhere from $10 to $50 apiece. Otherwise, a grower can obtain clones or create them from a single seed. Successful growers mostly use pricy specialized fertilizers. Most good product is grown indoors, so there's cost of lights, power, water, heating or air conditioning, cost of the space and however one values the labor.
Unlike street product, dispensaries have their stuff measured for THC and cannabinoid content by percentage. There are at least 85 cannabinoids including THC, and their quantities per gram, and more importantly, their relative quantities together, determine which symptoms are best served by each strain of plant. There's already a shit ton of data being collected and analyzed about this, and many patients can use this with their experiences to zero in on what's best for them. Now at $50 per test, it's even affordable for the home grower to monitor their own. It can get complicated. Like many others, I am being treated for multiple symptoms.
That's my yammering quota for the day, for talking about weed. I actually appreciate your inquisitiveness because it makes reevaluate my thinking. Cheers. LAR Adriator-Gruntled.png(kaizum me)Plant2.png 16:34, 17 Yoon 2015 (UTC)

Hee[edit source]

That's interesting. But how much do you grow at one time, and in what varieties? XY007talkcontributions 22:52, 17 Yoon 2015 (UTC)

Hee? I don't get what I said that gave you the giggles.
We have 9 plants budding right now, and others in veg, waiting. Lately we've been very happy with White Widow and Mega Jackpot. Our next ones to harvest are White Rhino, Critical and Crazy Miss Hyde. The first two have lived up to their reps, with stimulated creativity; more writing here, learning to cook Southeast Asian foods and having more energy; this is from the Sativa part. They've also worked well with pain, enhancing the meager dosages of narcotics I'm prescribed. Superb for nausea. I am down to about 20% of the prescription medicine I take for that. 1. I'm not talking about your pussy little tummy ache, or a sissy two week ordeal of horrible vomiting and/or other fluid release, like with a really bad flu or something. I mean lifelong, life-long, intractable nausea that cripples you on a regular basis; when a good day is not feeling shitty enough that you have to take something. I am thinking of someone I know who's had this condition since adolescence, and a botched lumbar surgery that makes her a chronic (seriously, though) pain patient as well. Marijuana has proven to be a good compliment to prescribed pain and nausea meds.
