You just created your own existence in asking that question. Additionally, in answering your question, I am also establishing my own existence.

“I think, therefore I am.”

~ René Descartes
If your having trouble establishing your very existence, think of it this way: nothing is nothing. That means that there is no such thing as nothing, as nothing is something in of itself. Therefore, if you think you are nothing, I've got news for you: you're something.

Obviously I would not be allowed to present such a subjective description to the 12th grade, since we would rely on the works of various philosophers and political idealists and theologians (among others) to come to the conclusion as to what a human being truly is from our point of view.
I find it to be a rather unnecessary course. I believe that we mustn't rely on the works of dead men from the past, regardless of their influence on modern society, to find out what a human is and the whole point of their existence in the universe. Instead, I think we need to simply look at what we know about ourselves; our nature, our thoughts, our ingenuity, our remarkable dynamics, and our ability to inherently question anything and everything.
I know some of those dead men have some of the answers, but since there's a whole course devoted to finding it, those answers most certainly are not definitive and therefore drive an insane frenzy of confusion and maybe even competition among others in trying to see which man solved the age old question
And thus, 12th-Grade CORE was created. Before the young men and women of the generation set off to university and face the world on their own, there's a supposed way to answer some unanswerable question (in the eyes of society) to help jump-start their lives.
I did find something, however, that both of us can agree on.

“[An] animal so lost in rapturous contemplation of what he thinks he is as to overlook what he indubitably ought to be.”

~ Ambrose Bierce
And this.

“The only animal for whom his own existence is a problem which he has to solve.”

~ Erich Fromm

I wonder what you think.
