reCAPTCHA also referred to as simple math or extremely ineffective spam filter is a wiki device put in place to prevent bots from posting links to their products on a wiki such as this one and also used to irritate it's legitimate contributors to no end. Whilst the problem may only be something like 5+2 the simple fact is, it wastes precious seconds that could be spent writing other articles.

The other irritating fact is that despite this annoying filter, Illogicopedia still gets spammed like there is no tomorrow. This is mainly because the a non-human can simply be programmed to guess the answer and get it right more often than seems reasonable.

reCAPTCHA was invented by a bored programmer who noticed that instead of getting telemarketers to spam people big companies could simply program bots and scripts to do it for them. Also he noted that despite the fact computers have been used to calculate pi to 100 million places, computers are incapable of simple addition problems.
