Forum:New Main Page
So, as you guys not oblivious to the recent changes may have noticed, iv been writing a new main page, because the old one, well, frankly, looks arse. so, i cut down all the crap, and this is what i have so far. User:Silent_Penguin/sandbox Id like some constructive criticism, its all a bit bland, its better than our old one, but its missing some of the things the old one had, i was hoping for what you all think of it, constructive criticism and how i can fit in some of the things the page is currently missing.--Silent PenguinLeave Me Alone 18:55, 9 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
- I have one minor note: How are you going to make the "Featured Image" thing at the top match the image that is actually displayed? —rms talk 18:57, 9 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
- I haven't looked into the way DPL's work, personally with the formatting of the featured image on the sandbox, it makes more sense to change the image manually, since atm, the image is generated randomly. The most important thing about an image is the image, not the name of the image after all, we don't cycle the articles, so why cycle the images?--Silent PenguinLeave Me Alone 19:02, 9 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
- Good point. But it would get sort of bland having one image for a couple days, wouldn't you think? Still, you have a good idea going there. —rms talk 19:04, 9 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
- The page now works with the dynamic list for featured images.--Silent PenguinLeave Me Alone 19:54, 9 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
- Ah. I see. So you want the things to be expanding on the rollover like that? For me it goes off the screen. —rms talk 20:02, 9 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
- Wow, how tiny is your screen then :P mine it pritty small and it works fine, its possibly to do with the width of the images being too big if you have your window too small, or you caught the glitch i found when i made the image frames insted of thumbs--Silent PenguinLeave Me Alone 20:41, 9 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
- No, the image part is fine. The article and featured writer though, are both halfway off the screen. —rms talk 20:44, 9 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
- Ugh! stupid IE, disregarding the standards and shit, drives me up the wall.--Silent PenguinLeave Me Alone 20:50, 9 Yoon 2009 (UTC)

- Wow, this is cool, penguin. Still needs a bit o' work, like, to get it working in IE, and the rollover text might be a bit large. All very minimalist and web 2.0ish, but to be brutally honest, I actually prefer the current main page. I don't think it necessarily looks rectum, it's just you've seen it so many times you're bored of it. -- Hindleyak Converse • ?blog • Click here! 12:30, 10 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, iv been having a bit of problems with IE and Opera, Opera renders the things without a background, and IE puts them in the wrong place, this is a bug in their rendering engines, not the page, since the page tells them to leave the tooltips where they are and fix them to the screen based on where they were positioned, i tried using the standard html to strip control of IE to basicly make the tooltips invisible to IE, but alas, mediawiki breaks them :@ bloody typical.--Silent PenguinLeave Me Alone 12:36, 10 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
- Right, Everything now appears in the right places on every browser I have tested, FF, Chrome, IE7, safari (for windows) and opera. All render correctly except for IE7 and opera, which render the tooltip transparency as transparent regardless. Time to figure that out :P --Silent PenguinLeave Me Alone 16:20, 10 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
- Personally, I think anyone who's still using Internet Explorer is
Mr. Metal Flowerygay. But that's just my opinion. --T3 16:25, 10 Yoon 2009 (UTC)- I would use Firefox, but I cannot stand the default font. I just can't The italics is..... don't get me started. But the IE default font is much better, and you can read the italics without trying to break the screen in frustration.
- Also, Hindley, or Seppy, or whoever, I have a revised featured articles page. I tried to make it display the dates, but I couldn't I like it much better than what we have now, personally. —rms talk 16:29, 10 Yoon 2009 (UTC)

- Right, Its finished :) I kinda like the final result, it works in all the browsers i have, now we can faff with any little bits you guys think are missing :@
I also noticed that the way the transparency was applied, it inherited to everything, so looks pritty pornfessional now :D --Silent PenguinLeave Me Alone 16:51, 10 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
- Oh, well I was about to say I didn't really care for the transparency. Also, I'm going to miss the MainPageVandalism and DYK's. —rms talk 16:57, 10 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
- We can fit them in somewhere, iv spent my time consentrating on making the features more accessable from the top of the page, i notice you cant reach the links in the tool tips either, is that annoying? I can either lay it out so that the tool tips are accessible, or we can just not put links into the pages. But if you guys can figure out a neat way of adding in the main page vandalism and DYK, because they kinda are part of the site.--Silent PenguinLeave Me Alone 17:06, 10 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
- Well, I think the tool box problem can besolved by just going to a different page. Nothing big there. —rms talk 17:09, 10 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
- Brilliant! I love the rollovers, it makes us look less n00bish.--Ben Blade 17:12, 10 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
- It makes us look way more css-knowledgeable than all the other wikis. —rms talk 17:13, 10 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
- Well, they now dont disappear when you mouse into them, better worse? also, nobody got any ideas for DYK News and Vandlepedia?, best idea got is a similar set-up to the projects bit.--Silent PenguinLeave Me Alone 18:04, 10 Yoon 2009 (UTC)

Can we possibleh...[edit source]
Work one or two more pics into the front page in some way or other? Otherwise, this is looking pretty slick - thumbs up, Penguin, top work... IOTM nom worthy stuff? -- Hindleyak Converse • ?blog • Click here! 13:40, 11 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
- HAr har Hindles, nice refference you turd! oo soup's done. -- 13:53, 11 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
- I do agree with you there yak, it does look like it needs some pictures to brighten it up, the user updating sections look a bit drab lately, only idea i can think of is stylising the titles of the various boxes at the bottom, ie so the vandalism one looks like some grafiti, the news one looking like the telegraph etc. any other ideas?--Silent PenguinLeave Me Alone 14:02, 11 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
- Sounds like a good idea. We could make some Photoshopped PNGs for the 'Did You Know', 'Vandalpedia' and 'News' sections etc. and maybe have some little icons or something. Hmm, I'll see what I can do with that... -- Hindleyak Converse • ?blog • Click here! 14:10, 11 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
- Coolio, haha, that "the more you know" image springs to mind too :P , but i think ED use something like that :/ . --Silent PenguinLeave Me Alone 14:16, 11 Yoon 2009 (UTC)
