Recently the question was raised about the number 8.386023, and whether it is a Sane or Insane number. Questions like this can be muddy because the topic, mathematics, is most rigorously logical. An argument was made that it is a Sane number because it is, "an actual number which it's possible to calculate with". A strong counterargument was made that, "It's insane, though, and has to do with Fnurdles."

It seems to me that the issue is defined by the number itself, and not the underlying article and it's content. In this case, since 8.386023 can be manipulated mathematically, it qualifies as Sane. I don't think it can be argued more clearly or powerfully, or succinctly. So, I (we?) win.

I am going to unilaterally move 8.386023 to Numbers of Sanity. If anyone would like to oppose this measure, set up a vote below. I am a cruel but fair admin. LAR Adriator-Gruntled.png(kaizum me)Plant2.png 23:13, 8 Octodest 2015 (UTC)

What counts as a "Number of Insanity"[edit source]

The whole idea of "Numbers of Insanity" is that you can't actually calculate with them in a meaningful way. So imaginary numbers aren't insane because they're used by real mathematicians. 42 isn't insane. Arbitrary decimal numbers aren't insane. "Two to the power of infinity minus one" is insane. "One hundred and pizza seven" is insane. --Nerd42 (talk) 00:09, 9 Octodest 2015 (UTC)

You see, there are rare cases in which contributing to Illogicopedia requires actual research. Even if it is vain, self-referential original research. There is such a thing as doing nonsense incorrectly, which is to do sense correctly. Or something like that. --Nerd42 (talk) 00:15, 9 Octodest 2015 (UTC)

LOL, um, I went crazy writing about this[edit source]

I wrote the insane numbers article, and Infinity-1 after making the amazing discovery that it is possible to get problems in Crazy Mathematics wrong! It's still math, which means you still suck at it. --Nerd42 (talk) 02:26, 9 Octodest 2015 (UTC)

Question[edit source]

OK, Sir Nerd42. It appears that you are establishing dominance in illogical maths matters here, so I will pretend you are the resident bull goose loony mathematician, or something like that. Can you explain why sqrt 0 is an expression? And would it not be an Insane Expression? Thanks in advance for your elucidations. Also, will you accept the title of Chief Bull Goose Loony Mathematician for Illogicopedia, or something like that? I think it's kinda cool. LAR Adriator-Gruntled.png(kaizum me)Plant2.png 03:20, 9 Octodest 2015 (UTC)

The trouble with the square root of zero is that I'm pretty sure it is a valid mathematical expression in sane math which is defined as being equal to zero. It's not undefined, like anything divided by zero would be. The square root of zero is just zero. Not particularly amusing. and certainly not insane.

Y'know what, I think I'm even going to merge 0 with √ 0. --Nerd42 (talk) 20:38, 10 Octodest 2015 (UTC)
